A 21-amino-acid peptide encoded within the 16S rRNA region of the mitochondrial genome, making it one of the known mitochondria-derived peptides (MDPs). Blood levels decline with age. Research in animals has documented cytoprotective, anti-apoptotic, neuroprotective, and metabolic effects. Also studied in the context of Alzheimer's protection and insulin sensitivity.
