Peptide Bond

The covalent chemical bond formed between the carboxyl group (–COOH) of one amino acid and the amino group (–NH₂) of an adjacent amino acid, releasing a water molecule (condensation reaction). The fundamental structural linkage in all peptide and protein chains. In peptides, these bonds are targets for proteolytic enzymes (peptidases), which is why most peptides cannot survive oral administration intact.
