POMC

A large precursor polypeptide produced in the anterior pituitary, hypothalamus, and skin. Post-translational cleavage of POMC produces multiple bioactive peptides including ACTH, α-MSH, β-MSH, β-endorphin, and CLIP. The melanocortin system peptides (Melanotan II, PT-141, alpha-MSH) are derived from or mimic POMC-derived fragments.
